40 foot straight frame chassis are needed for 40 foot containers without tunnels. So if you are carrying custom made containers it important to identify whether your container has a tunnel. The 40 foot straight frame chassis will carry flat and tunnel type containers 8 foot 6 inches high.

Chassis is designed and built according to Association of American Railroads (AAR), Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), International Standards Organization (ISO), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Department of Transportation (DOT), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association (TTMA) standards.

Chassis come standard with 10×20 tires on 5 spoke wheels and spring suspension.  Options include air suspension and 11R22.5 tires on 10-hole disc wheels.

About Intermodal & Container Trailers (Chassis Only)

CIMC 33-Foot Slider Intermodal Container Trailer

Despite the long history of shipping large quantities of goods from one destination to another, often via ship or train, the intermodal or container trailers you commonly see today really didn’t exist until the mid-1950s when Malcom P. McLean set out to develop the rectangular containers and then modify a ship for carrying those containers.

Within a matter of years, the containers, sometimes referred to as freight containers and sea cans, became widely used and the industry standardized on sizes and corner fittings so the same container, regardless of manufacturer, could easily be stacked and transported by train, truck, or ship and loaded and unloaded by crane. Thanks to ISO standards, the most common container sizes today are 20 or 40 feet, with heights of 8 feet, 6 inches and widths of 8 feet, although both oversized and smaller containers are available.

Different container chassis models in the market

Depending on your shipping requirements and, of course, the container size, there are several types of chassis available in the market. Let’s take a look at them.

Container chassis by purpose

Chassis type by feature/design

  • Gooseneck chassis
  • Extendable chassis
  • Heavy-duty chassis
  • Lightweight chassis
  • Combo chassis
  • Rear B-train chassis
  • Straight frame chassis

Container Chassis by design

Number of axles/ weight threshold

You can choose the number of axles in the chassis depending on the cargo or container weight. Remember: the more the number of axles, the more the load capacity it can hold. For daily usage, 2 or 3 axle chassis is your best choice.

A standard chassis transports standard ISO containers (20ft and 40ft) with two axles. Generally, a tri-axle chassis is needed to carry 20ft containers above the weight of 36,000 lbs or 40ft containers above 44,000 lbs.

You can choose different types and sizes of container chassis depending on your requirements.
